Every kind of water sport is available in and around Side, including paragliding, jet-skiing and diving.
Located near the town of Serik, about 30km from the apartmnent, the Aspendos Theatre is the best-preserved theatre of the ancient world. It was built in AD 155 by the Greek architect Zenon, a native of the city, during the rule of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, and was used until very recently for concerts and plays, thanks to its amazing acoustics, which are still not rivalled today.
Nearby stand the remains of a basilica, agora, nymphaeum and 15 kilometers (9.3 mi) of Roman aqueduct. The Roman Eurymedon Bridge, reconstructed in the 13th century, is also in the vicinity.
The town Manavgat, which is 3km from the apartment, was founded on the fertile plain that is drained by the River Manavgat, which flows down from the Taurus mountains. The Northern part of the town is bordered by the beautiful forests that cover the foothills.
The powerful Manavgat Falls are definitely worth a visit. With a cafe right next to the famously jade green waters of the river, it makes for a great place to relax. Boat trips are available too!
The apartment has great views of the Taurus Mountains (Toros in Turkish), and you may find yourself wondering what lies amongst those hills, forests and rocky heights. The Toros mountain complex is major mountain range running approximately 560 kms parallel to the coast, where many large rivers rise, including the local Manavgat River and also the major rivers of Iraq, the Tigris and the Euphrates.
Limestone has eroded to form karstic landscapes of waterfalls, underground rivers, and the largest caves of Asia, especially in the Yedigoller valley.
With copious spectacular fast-flowing rivers, the mountains are also a Mecca for lovers of white-water rafting and canoeing.
Side has been occupied since the 7th century BC, and it's no surprise that it's full of the ancient city remains. One of the most notable ruins is the Temple of Apollo. A five-minute walk from Side's town centre, the temple is adjacent to Side harbour. Apollo was the god of God of Light, Beauty and Art, and according to legend the temple was given to Cleopatra as a token of Anthony's love. It is made entirely of marble, and was built in the second half of the 2nd century A.D. Nearby there are other important ruins that date back even further, to the 7th century B.C.
The local food is a delicious blend of Turkish, Arabic, Persian and Greek influences, and has much in common with other parts of the Mediterranean region. Locals in Side eat a lot of fish, vegetables, meat and fruit and have a very healthy diet. Turkish coffee is a popular refreshment in Side with most cafes and restaurants offering it to guests after a meal. The coffee here is very strong and has a distinct taste that only few palates can adapt to. Some say that Turkish men used to judge potential brides by how well they made a cup of coffee.
For golf vacations Turkey is fast becoming a favourite alternative to the traditionally popular European countries. It has several world-class courses, with many more planned. All professional courses have been developed by international golf architects and professional players.
In particular, Side and Antalya province have excellent golf clubs, including the new Lykia links course. Links to several other clubs are listed below.
Ora Tours offer a wide range of great value tours and excursions, including the Taurus Mountains, Antalya, White-water rafting, and boat trips.
